Jon White: Thorpe St. Andrew
I have to go to Mattishall 1 to 2 times a week and the
junction needs improvement. Catherine

I travel on the A47 every day and want to add my name
to the petition to improve the single carriageway, I
have seen evidence of far too many accidents on this
road, it has to be improved! Robert
Crosby:
The East of England Assembly should be embarrassed
by the state of the counties roads. The smallest collision
can cause chaos for hours and all to often we read
in the press of another death. Norwich is one of very
few cities that cannot be reached from London by at
least dual carriageway and this harms the local economy
with under investment. I drive over 50000 miles a
year and in the worse case scenario I would be happy
to support private capital and road fees to avoid
further injury if this meant faster resolvement. Good
luck with the campaign, its pleasing to see Keith
Simpson has it at the heart of his manifesto.
Stefan Langberg:
Horstead, Norwich
We spend at least 10 minutes trying to get on the a47
from that junction and know how dangerous that road
really is. Jim & Sue Rawlings:
Chapel Break
As a family which regularly travels the A47 between
Norwich and Nottingham, we all wholeheartedly support
the call for any measures to make the section between
Norwich and Dereham safer. Please add all the names
below to your petition: Penny
Boyce & Sean Webster:
Shipdham
Please would you include our names in the petition calling
for improvements to the single carriageway stretch between
Norwich and Dereham, as we travel along this stretch
of road most days. Thank You and good luck with this
campaign. Caroline Rawlings:
Toftwood
I have been very upset by the number of accidents that
have happened on the road since I have resumed working
in Norwich over the last 3 years. Over this period the
traffic has increased considerably and the standard
of driving has gone down as many drivers become increasing
frustrated with the long delays experienced. If the
4 miles was duelled between the Dereham bypass and the
Southern bypass this would greatly help this part of
the A47, and would make all the junctions onto the road
much safer for all road users. This does not preclude
the remainder of the A47 which should also be duelled.
I hope this helps in your case and helps to prevent
any other families suffering the same sad loss as yourselves.
Good luck Jill
Gorton:
My daughter and her husband and two little toddler twins,
who live in Mattishall, had quite a nasty accident in
their car a little while ago when they were hit by another
vehicle when attempting to cross the A47. Very fortunately
they were not seriously injured, but my daughter suffered
shoulder injury and neck whiplash which, in fact, she
still has trouble with today, and they were all traumatised.
Anything to improve this terrible crossing onto the
A47, which has claimed lives, sadly David Jackson being
the latest, would be good.
I give my full support to the petition.
Matthew Barrett: Lowestoft.
As a former Mattishall resident (my family still live
in the village) I would like to add my name to Andrea's
petition.
Like many people I was shocked to hear of the crash
which claimed David's life, and left so many people
without a friend.
I hope that thanks to the efforts of Andrea we can finally
see improvements on this stretch of road.
I grew up in Mattishall, went to both schools there,
and had almost 20 happy years in the village, but every
time I ventured out towards Norwich I was scared of
the Honingham Road junction.
Please pass on my regards, thoughts and best wishes,
to the families of both David and Simon. Margaret
Tomlinson:
Please pass my sympathies and condolences to the family
of David Jackson. What a tragic accident and sad loss
of so young a life. I would like to put my name to the
petition for changes to the A47. My 90 year old mother
lives in Honingham and we often visit from Fakenham,
taking our lives in our hands to cross the A47. My husband,
Stuart Tomlinson, has asked that his name be added to
the petition too. With sympathy, Sue
Dickerson: Gorleston
Please add my name to the list of signatures for the
A47 campaign. I regularly travel between Gorleston and
Kings Lynn during day, evening and night and believe
there should be no delay in dualling the whole length
of this road.
I wish you all luck with the campaign. John
Reeve: Felthorpe
I use this junction and the Honingham crossing frequently
to visit my mentally handicapped daughter at The Oaks
in Mattishall and I will gladly sign your petition to
get this dangerous road dualled or, at the very least,
provided with roundabouts at both junctions. The usual
penny-pinching on busy main routes like this is what
causes deaths and serious injuries, not to mention the
frustrating & endless delays. I wish you every success.
Jean Deegan:
I am certainly in support of your petition, it is a
dreadful bit of road and should have been dualled long
ago. So sorry for your loss Good luck!
Tim Pegg:
My name is Tim Pegg. I would like to put my name and
my wife's name Hilary to the petition to do something
about this horrendous junction!
We have experienced this junction on 23rd December
1999 with what could have easily been an accident
with fatalities! I have attached the report I gave
to my insurers as a pdf file (Acrobat Reader, sorry
if you know that).
I have puzzled over her dazed and incoherent responses
at the time, which I do not think were entirely caused
by the accident. I believe she was breathalysed, as
I was, and found to be clear!
I was recently reminded of a story about helicopter
pilots, in the Armed Forces, having a series of unexplained
accidents whilst coming into land. The cause was believed
to have been the way the helicopters were forming
in line astern to come into land that a pilot could
be mesmerised by the previous helicopter's rotor blades!
I believe the MoD made an order forbidding line astern
formations!
Having waited at this junction, but only at non rush
hour times, I feel certain that the repetitive motion
of the traffic causes this mesmerising effect and
much more so at peak times! The junction is also situated
on a bend and at the top of a slight incline so that
traffic with headlights on, coming in either/both
directions, will momentarily flash into the eyes of
the motorist trying to come out of the junction.
I would suggest that an expert medical opinion should
be sort and consulted with my hypothesis and the junction
could possibly closed on medical grounds!? I think
that would wake up the various authorities concerned
and galvanise them into some sort of action very quickly?
I do hope so.
Judith Miller: Sheringham
I would like to be added to your petition for dualling
the A47. Until recently my son who is in the air force
used that road every day to get to work and as a mother
I was constantly listening out for accidents etc.
good luck to you all don't give up.
.Janet Smith:
I am a mother of two teenagers, one of whom attended
the funeral for David & I cannot drive to work
in Norwich in the mornings without feeling sad at
such a terrible waste of life as I pass the junction.
We used to live in Honingham so know only too well
just how awful that particular junction is. Our sympathy
goes out to David's family and friends
Mr and Mrs David Gray: Beeston
Please add my husband and my name to the petition
- it is absolutely essential that this stretch of
the A47 is dualled before any more tragedies occur.
Rich:
I would like you to add my name to the list please.
I have long thought that the stretch of road is a
real nightmare, then on the 26th November last year
I was knocked off my motorcycle at the Mattishall
junction by a car pulling out in front of me. My injuries
were quite serious and my bike was written off. The
worst thing about it is the stress and grief my wife
and kids went through. This road needs to be sorted.
Karen Nugent: Scarning
We live off Drayton Hall Lane, another really bad
turning off the A47 at the end of the Dereham dual
carriageway (Swaffham bound). There are so many accidents/near
misses at this junction as people have to sit in the
middle of the road to turn across oncoming traffic
from Swaffham. People will overtake near the junction
when it is not safe to do so. So called ‘improvement
work’ was carried out earlier this year whereby
they painted a section of the road pink (doesn’t
seem to make much difference). It is also very dangerous
crossing this road to go to Toftwood/ Scarning and
it is impossible during rush hour. I guess some of
these accidents are contributed to by bad driving
but if the road was made safer in the first place,
the accidents would diminish. The road was built before
the housing estates off Drayton Hall Lane but maybe
they should have refused the builds unless the road
junction was improved, which should have a roundabout/bridge
to make it safer for the higher volume of traffic.
Mrs and Mrs Hall:
Dereham
Please add my name to the list for dualling of this
stretch of the A.47 I am very concerned about the
tragedies that have occurred, my family frequently
use this stretch of road. Dereham is set to expand
further in coming years and this will mean more traffic
on this road.
Laura Apps-Green: Norwich
I am an officer working at Breckland Council and travel
into work along the A47 everyday. The journey scares
me every day and I have lost count of the amount of
accidents that have occurred in the last 2 years. I
would welcome improvements to the road and feel that
the problem can no longer be ignored and discarded!
Linda &
Frank Lambert:
As a mother who lost a daughter on the A47 I have every
sympathy with Andrea and her family and know the terrible
heartache they are going through. We have met and made
friends with many families in the same position so anything
we can do to help we will. I have sent an e mail to
Stephen Ladyman hope he listens and some action is taken
before there are more unnecessary deaths.
Emma Parnell-Cook and Jon Eastwood:
Necton
I would like to add my name to the petition to improve
the A47. I drive to Norwich from Necton every day, and
am constantly amazed at the amount of traffic using
the road. The carriageway between Dereham and Easton
is a particularly bad stretch of road and I certainly
feel that it should be duelled. Please give my best
wishes to Mrs Jackson. She really has shown a true strength
of character since the tragic loss of her son.
Richard and Ruth
Ottaway: South
Walsham
I whole heartily support your campaign for lifesaving
improvements to the A47 - that particular junction has
always been dangerous, I can remember many a near miss
from when I lived in Dereham some 40 odd years ago.
I wish you every success and please add our names to
your petition. Andrew and Sheelin
Cuthbert: Field Dalling, Holt
My wife and I would like to add our names to your petition
for improvements to the A47 which we regularly cross
on our way to and from our grandchildren at East Tuddenham.
Helen Fenlon:
I believe you are campaigning for improvements to the
A47 Mattishall turn, please could you add my name to
your petition as I have always found this junction particularly
dangerous. I wish you every success
Janet Warren: Norwich
Taverham I live at the Ringland end of Taverham
and I travel the A47 morning and night to go to work
at Shipdham. I feel that my safety on the road is threatened
at whatever time I travel it - I come out of the Ringland
road (virtually opposite a turn to Colton) and turn
left and go up to the Easton roundabout and come back
as I do not wish to cross the road at any time of day.
I could go through Ringland and come up on the Easton
roundabout but to meet this roundabout and go anywhere
but left is also very difficult and very dangerous !
We desperately need something done.
Mrs C. Ball:
Guildford
I have been traveling to visit relatives in Mattishall
for over 40 years and in fact was travelling to Mattishall
when I was diverted at Costessy, due to the tragic
fatal accident on 3rd October. It is quite incredible
that in all these years, no improvements have been
made to this junction - in spite of the volume and
capacity and speed of heavy traffic I would indeed
like to add my name and address to your campaign.
Sue Chapman: Scarning, Dereham.
I travel along the A47 everyday between Dereham &
Norwich. I work in Upper King Street. Door to door
17 miles. My hours are 9-5. My average speed on my
journey to work is less than 15 miles per hour. I
manage a couple of miles on the dual carriageway before
I start to queue & it just completely does my
head in. The only way to avoid the hold up would be
if I hit the A47 before 7.15 & it is just not
practical. Some days I spend 3 hours a day just getting
to & from work. I now use Costessey Park &
Ride. It can take anything from 35 to 50 mins to do
what is otherwise a 15 min journey off peak. The road
is treacherous. I see at least 2 accidents a week
although usually the traffic is at a complete standstill
for apparently no reason. It is mainly due to huge
volumes of traffic & drivers stopping to let other
cars out from side roads. THE ROAD NEEDS TO BE DUAL
CARRIAGEWAY!!!! Good Luck
Louise, Sam & Joe
Wilson: Yaxham
I live in Yaxham, but work, and attend College, in
Norwich. I travel by car, and head back to Dereham
to get onto the A47 as I do not like to use the Mattishall
junction. Please, please will you add my name to your
petition, along with that of my children - they are
still young, but I would like to see improvements
before they start to drive Many thanks, and good luck.
Diane Turner: Mattishall
Yes! of course we are a 100% behind you on this matter.
The junction is a complete and utter nightmare. I
know it too well having from 1994 to 2000 to travel
into Norwich to work each day from the village. Steadily
the junction became worse and worse to negotiate.
This was particular true after the summer hols up
to the Christmas period. Thankfully I do not have
that journey anymore, and like us all was horrified
to hear about the fatal accident to the Jackson lad.
Let us know what we need to do if you require more
support in your mission to get something done. A roundabout
would be an immediate improvement
Carol Warman:
Mattishall
Ray, I fully agree with all you write about the A47
and would support you or any group who campaigns for
this improvement.
Jenny Pennell: Mattishall
The Mattishall Society had a Committee last Thursday
and it was agree that we wholly support this campaign
and if we can be of any help at all please let us
know.
Roger Pummell:
Uniglaze 2 (East Anglia) Ltd
The company of is only too pleased to offer its full
support and backing for your ‘A47 Campaign’.
As you are well aware we have many vehicles using
this section of the A47 every day and believe the
road must have major improvements such as dualling
and safer crossings to and from the surrounding villages.
These would benefit everybody using the road. We would
be pleased to be kept updated on the progress of your
meetings with the Highways Agency
in the future. Yours Sincerely on behalf of Uniglaze-2
Jayne Curson: Taverham
I must admit I hate travelling on that road, fortunately
I dont have to do it very often, I periodically attend
a meeting at Wendling and have tried to turn right
onto the A47. I dont even attempt it now I go via
another route which brings me back on the A47 without
the need to cross it.
I have a son aged 18 so my thoughts are with Mrs Jackson
at this very sad time, she is a very brave woman.
Good luck
Philip and Patricia
Bunting: Dereham
We live near Etling Green and our children go to school
at Hockering Primary. I cringe every morning on the
school run as drivers speed up to get in front of
me before the dual carriageway runs out. Also coming
home from school is the challenge of trying to turn
right onto the A47 which I no longer attempt, I go
the long way home through Stone Road. So for many
various reasons we are in support of the petition.
Billy and Suzie Ritchie: Honingham
We live on Wood Lane in Honingham and have to cross
the A47 at least 4 times a day at very busy times
ie: school trips etc. We have dreadful trouble even
getting out of our driveway as lorries and cars seem
to treat Wood Lane as a motor way before they join
the A47. We have experienced many near misses ourselves
on the A47 Honingham junction and have had one minor
accident.
Jill Gorton:
Taverham
I would like to add my name as one very worried parent
whose family use, daily, the junction from Mattishall
onto the A47. My daughter, her husband and twin children
were in an accident on this junction, fortunately,
there was more damage to their car than to them, although
my daughter suffered a nasty whiplash injury, which
she still suffers pain from today.
I fear that sooner or later there is going to be another
accident on this junction. I use it myself and know
just how dangerous it is. How many more accidents
will there have to be to warrant something being done?
It has come to my attention that a roundabout there
is being suggested. This would certainly alleviate
the situation. I am of the opinion that a roundabout
would save lives. Please, why can't this situation
be given top priority? |
