MATTISHALL YOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB

MYFC continues to thrive, with seven teams playing in competitive leagues across the county. There are four 11 a-side teams from the Under 12’s to Under 16’s and three mini soccer teams, the Under 9-11’s.

The Saturday morning training for children from year 1 upwards is very popular and at the earliest opportunity these children engage in playing friendly matches.

The mini soccer team’s Under 9’s have had a brilliant start to their season in the Norfolk Youth Football Combination League (Evening News). They’ve played 6, won 5, drawn 1 and are just one point behind the leaders.

The Under 10’s, who are also in the Norfolk Youth Football Combination “Hunter” League, had a difficult start to season with two losses, but recovered with two wins. They only narrowly lost to two of the top teams in their league.

The Under 11’s (who are in the Mid-Norfolk mini-soccer division 2) have had a great start to their season with two wins, two draws and one loss. The most notable of their results was a 3-2 victory against top of the league Dereham Wanderers.

The Under 12’s last went from strength to strength last season and finished in fine form. Their hard work has paid off this season and they remain unbeaten in the South Norfolk Youth League and were top with 5 wins and a draw.

After topping their league last season, winning 17 out of their 18 games, the Under 13’s team are adjusting to playing in division one against teams with considerable experience.

Following their promotion last year from division 2, the under 14’s have adjusted to the top flight and are currently leading their league with four wins and one loss.

After initially struggling to find sufficient players to field a team in the Norfolk Combination league, the under 16’s have given a creditable performance with 2 wins out of 5 matches.

Fifty years after the RAJ
Mr. Keith Wills entertained members with this illustrated talk at the September meeting. The title was somewhat misleading, as he did not compare India now with India under the RAJ, but showed stunning photographs which he had taken on a guided trek in NW India. The slides did show the poverty of the people, but also their cheerfulness and dignity and how they make the best of so little. Mr. Wills¹ group sometimes camped and sometimes stayed in local schools overnight. These were generally tiny concrete buildings, with no equipment, in which the school master also lived. Small children would think nothing of walking for an hour and a half to school each day, carrying some wood for the teacher¹s fire, perhaps in payment of their lessons. The bleak beauty of the terrain was underscored by pictures of landslides, cutting villages off for months and forcing the people to be totally self-sufficient.

Mr. Wills raises money for a children¹s liver disease charity and drew members' attention to Fakenham's Christmas Tree Festival which is held between 30th November and 7th December, where there is an opportunity to donate to a wide variety of charities.

Anna English.
